Why Dr Clerval is More Rotten than Mason Eckhart
These characters share several similarities beyond being articulate and educated.
They are both accomplished liars, capable of delivering a lie without a twitch should falsehood suit their purposes. They both operate within a government hierarchy of secrets and deceptions. Both of them Lunoki command subordinates willing to do anything they are told.
Even though the statistics do not support it, the general belief in Mutant X fandom is that Eckhart is surely the most evil man who ever lived. How does Dr Clerval compare to him?
Dr Clerval speaks high-mindedly about eliminating many of the ills of humanity by eliminating genetic disease and predisposition to problems, claiming benevolent purpose for his experimentation. However, the outcome of his project evidently left a lot of people dead. Clerval appears to have been pursuing goals of his own choosing with little regard for anyone else.
In contrast, Mason Eckhart’s actions are defined as protecting society from the Genomex mutants, as part of a federal law enforcement agency. Certainly these mutants are a problem, and do present a threat to the society as a whole. Eckhart is not pursuing mutants for personal reasons.
Dr Clerval appears to have ordered Brach to murder Schiller’s parents, and in so doing had murder done in his name for his own personal gain—in this case, Schiller. Mason Eckhart had Frank Thorne kill Dr Paul Breedlove to prevent Breedlove from making knowledge of the Genomex mutants public, and causing a general panic.
Dr Clerval became Schiller’s de facto guardian after her parents were murdered, so he was twice over an authority figure to her, charged with her protection. By initiating a sexual relationship with Schiller, he betrayed both roles as guardian and researcher.
Mason Eckhart never uses anyone under his command or influence to promote his own personal interests, and in fact consistently places mission concerns above himself.
If the end of Trinity does indeed see Schiller back in a research setting under Clerval’s authority, it is apparently that Dr Clerval has learned nothing from past mistakes, still speaking the same “Are you hungry…” mantra, asserting authority over Schiller. In this way, and others, Clerval more closely resembles Adam rather than Eckhart.
